Description:
Supervises the department in an efficient manner by planning, organizing and controlling all activities of the department. Implement, interpret and enforce work standards and procedures within the unit that are in compliance with the Hospital’s policies, governmental regulations and various regulatory agency requirements. The Manager will facilitate the operation of the Obstetrical Department through participation, contribution and cooperation with peers, other managers and supervisors, and the Director of Patient Care Services.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA:
- The OB Nurse Manager is accountable for the supervision of all OB services, in order to provide safe, effective and efficient care to all patients.
- Supervises the department in an efficient manner by planning, organizing and controlling all activities of the department.
- Is responsible to uphold the Hospital’s Mission, Vision and Values Statements.
- The OB manager will follow, and oversee that the staff follow the Code of Mutual Respect and Professionalism
- Implement, interpret and enforce work standards and procedures within the OB Department that are in compliance with hospitals policies, governmental regulations and various regulatory agency requirements.
- Serve as a role model for nursing staff by complying with established policies and procedures.
- Incorporate total quality management concepts into unit operations.
- Develop, implement, monitor and enforce the principles of effective nursing care on the OB Department.
- Develop effective communications between OB personnel, physicians and other departments to assure continuity, coordination and collaboration in delivering services.
- Provides direct patient care when higher levels of skill and judgement are required
- Demonstrate the skills and knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served.
- May work different shifts and/or days for orientation, training and evaluation of personnel in the OB department.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge in the field so they may recommend new services, products and equipment.
- Update, review (yearly), and develop policies and procedures as needed.
- Continue professional development by attending education programs designed for nursing leaders.
- Interview, select, evaluate, discipline and terminate personnel or recommending such action as necessary.
- Assure that employees receive orientation and required in-service training and that they maintain required licensure or certification.
- Maintain personnel records as required.
- Develop work schedules and assign OB personnel on the basis of patient needs and appropriate nursing intervention.
- Prepare the departmental budget, routine and special reports and various forms and documents as required.
- Attend the quarterly OB/PEDS Committee Meeting and provide the OB department STATS, staffing, policy and procedures and department updates to the providers.
- Attend hospital management meetings as requested.
- Conduct OB Department staff meetings on a routine basis.
- Adhere to the infection control policies and procedures of the hospital.
- Maintains a well-stocked and aseptic department by overseeing the cleaning of equipment and replacing of supplies and medications.
- May work off shifts, weekends and holidays, be on-call and work more than standard hours.
- Works closely with the Acute Care Manager to assign OB staff to AC during times of low OB census.
- Other responsibilities may be assigned or delegated by the Director of Patient Care Services.
Requirements:
- Graduated from an accredited School of Nursing.
- Nursing Baccalaureate degree (BSN) from an accredited school
- Current License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Washington
- At least five years of recent experience in obstetrical nursing with demonstrated clinical knowledge and leadership qualities
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a management position.
- Current BLS, ACLS, NRP and AWHONN Fetal Monitoring
- At least five years of recent experience in obstetrical nursing with demonstrated clinical knowledge and leadership qualities
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
- Delegate and coordinate through leadership skills.
- She/he must demonstrate professional behavior.
- She/he must participate in continuing education and demonstrate motivation for continued self-improvement.
- Ability to communicate with people of diverse backgrounds and educational levels; i.e. patients, families, employees, physicians, etc.
