Blood Bank Supervisor Job Opening in Florida

Job opening in a 300+ bed hospital on the Eastern shores of FL near Melbourne, for an experienced Blood Bank Supervisor to join their team.  All candidates MSUT be ASCP certified and eligible to obtain the FL license in all 5 areas of the lab as well as the Supervisor’s license.

Under the direction of the laboratory manager, the Blood Bank Supervisor is responsible for the supervision of all aspects of the blood bank and serology sections of the laboratory.  The Supervisor is responsible

for assuring the proper performance of all routine procedures in the assigned sections.  The Supervisor must be familiar with a variety of the field’s concepts, practices, and procedures.  The job includes, but is

not limited to, planning daily work, scheduling, writing procedures, review of quality control and quality assurance, compliance with regulatory standards, and evaluation of assigned staff.  The Supervisor

normally performs the duties of a technologist in his/her areas of responsibility, as workload requires.  The Blood Bank Supervisor will be supportive of hospital and laboratory administration.

  • Supervision of workflow with staffing level.
  • Serves as the primary point-of-contact when dealing with outside blood suppliers and users.
  • Ensures compliance to regulatory requirements.
  • Counsels and performs verbal corrective action and, if required, proceeds to a written notice of corrective action in conjunction with the laboratory manager.
  • Reviews competency and does performance evaluations of reporting staff members.
  • Researches and resolves problems, concerns and complaints.
  • Monitors inventory and ordering of blood products and blood bank supplies.
  • Investigates and supervises evaluation of new technical procedures and instrumentation.
  • Frequent interactions with laboratory manager regarding lab operations.
  • Assists with marketing of laboratory services.
  • Assists with planning, budgeting, and operational/financial reports.
  • Technical, clerical and phlebotomy assistance as needed.
  • Participates on a variety of laboratory committees.
  • Monitors and provides leadership in clinical productivity, ensuring maximum quality and minimum turn-around times.
  • Provides direction in proficiency testing of technical personnel; informs laboratory manager and medical director of outliers.
  • Assures consistent and staff utilization of pending logs and unreceived reports.  Procedures for use of these reports are clearly defined, communicated, and enforced.
  • Reviews competency and does performance evaluations of reporting staff members in a timely manner.
  • Assures preventative and corrective maintenance is performed on equipment and instruments, assures blood products are maintained at proper temperatures, and properly performs periodic alarm function c  checks.
  • Is able to troubleshoot analytical problems and identify and implement appropriate corrective actions.  Assures accurate records are maintained and provides timely feedback to staff to ensure improvements.
  • Reviews all blood bank and serology records in time intervals as stipulated by regulatory agencies.  Provides timely feedback to staff to ensure improvements.
  • Keeps up with blood bank statistical data.  Provides monthly quality assurance measurements as outlined in the laboratory quality improvement program.
  • Evaluates new blood bank or serology equipment as requested, working with technologists in appropriate section.
  • Prepares, evaluates, institutes and monitors new procedures as required.
  • Ensures continuous updates and revisions to procedure manuals in clinical sections.
  • Reviews in a timely manner and in accordance with regulatory requirements all work performed in assigned sections(s) or shift in order to assure completeness and accuracy, and timely documented reporting of critical values and stats.
  • Consistently ensures that test results correlate with patient diagnosis and each other.  Questions all incompatible results and notification values and directs repeats as necessary.  Documents investigative processes.
  • Develops, plans and coordinates blood bank procedures and activities related to laboratory support of the hospital’s open heart program.
  • Assigns personnel to provide proper instruction and orientation to new associates and students, and assures their training is complete and appropriate for their needs and the needs of the hospital.
  • Provides leadership for the activities of internal laboratory committees (education, QA, QI team, etc.).  Encourages participation across shifts, sections, and positions.
  • Maintains a positive rapport with the medical staff, nursing personnel and laboratory associates.
  • Monitors inventory and ordering of blood products and blood bank supplies.
  • Technical, clerical and phlebotomy assistance as needed.
  • Attends in-services and is compliant with essential education without prompting from manager.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:      

  • Associate’s Degree required; Baccalaureate Degree preferred.
  • Florida temporary license or regular license as Laboratory Supervisor or eligible in four (4) areas, immunohematology and serology required.
  • Certification by ASCP, NCA, AMT, AAB, or an equivalent certifying agency preferred.  SBB certification strongly preferred.
  • Must obtain the required number of continuing education credits deemed necessary by the State of Florida for professional license renewal.
  • Minimum of five (5) years in a clinical hospital supervisory capacity preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years in blood bank supervisory experience preferred.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of general technical laboratory experience.
