|Under the general direction of the Pathologist, performs gross description and dissection of complex and simple human surgical specimens; dictates gross findings on selected specimens using appropriate terminology, and refers tissue sections for microscopic review by the Pathologist. The Pathology Assistant obtains the patient’s clinical history and maintains and coordinates specimens and records for specialized procedures using appropriate protocols. S/he confers with the Pathologists to identify the special techniques and procedures that will be necessary for diagnosis (e.g. histochemical, immunflurescense, cultures, smears, etc.), performs specialized procedures such as frozen section and decalcification, and notifies all personnel involved for those procedures. In addition, the Pathology Assistant assists the Histology staff with accessioning pathology cases, organizing the daily workflow, and troubleshooting problems in the gross room and autopsy suite. S/he assists Pathologists who perform postmortem examinations/autopsies, ascertains proper legal authorization has been obtained for autopsies, and notifies physician in charge, funeral home, and other applicable authorities. The Pathology Assistant is responsible for assuring proper maintenance of equipment and adequate supplies as applicable to these duties.
Education: Bachelor’s degree required, with a Master’s degree preferred.
Certifications: Certification as a Pathologist’s Assistant, certification-eligible, or equivalent required. ASCP certified required.
Membership in the American Association of Pathologist’s Assistants preferred.
Experience: Minimum of one year experience required.
